MY GERMAN QUESTION by Peter Gay | Kirkus Reviews
A disappointingly lackluster memoir focusing on the six boyhood life (1933—39) Gay spent in Nazi Berlin. All the sophisticated and rhetorical dimensions that make superior student and biographer Gay (author of the five-volume The Bourgeois Experience, etc.) such a superb academic writer—a somewhat detached, reflective, intellectually careful and elegant approach’serve him little well once written communication autobiographically. For example, even when describing the nov 1938 national persecution known as Kristallnacht, he gives shortened confession to his own observations and reactions.
